Brazilian butt lift (BBL) and Buttock Implants
A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a specialized procedure using fat from your own body where excess fat is removed from the hips, abdomen, lower back, or thighs with liposuction.  A portion of this fat is then used as a filler, and strategically injected into the buttock area to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks.
The results from a BBL can last for several years. It can take up to six months for results from a BBL to be fully realized. This is a semi-permanent procedure simply because the nature of your fat is only semi-permanent.  Your butt will change over time as it responds to the normal aging process, whether or not you gain or lose substantial amounts of weight and your overall diet.
Buttock implants are can be used in conjunction with this procedure or instead of this, depending on your individual needs, to give more like more curves and/or a well-balanced physique. They will improve an individual’s buttock contour by creating a fuller shape and like breast implant surgery, places artificial implants in between gluteal muscle to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. This surgery does not aim to widen the hips.
Surgical Procedure
During buttock augmentation, implants are placed through an incision made either where the cheek meets the back of the thigh or in the buttock crease (where scars are not as noticeable). The surgeon then creates a pocket large enough to place the implants.
Your surgeon will advise you on the most suitable procedure for you. Once placed, the surgeon confirms that each cheek is symmetrical and looks natural. The incisions are closed, and a compression garment is applied.
If both procedures are been performed together, your surgeon then uses liposuction to remove fat from other areas of your body, such as your hips, stomach, and thighs. Liposuction itself involves making incisions in the skin and then using a tube to remove fat from the body. The fat stores that have just been removed from your body are purified and readied for injection into your buttocks.
Your surgeon finishes by injecting the processed fat into specific areas of the buttocks to create a more rounded, full look. They make three to five incisions around the buttocks for fat transfers. Both liposuction and fat transfer incisions are closed up with stitches. Your surgeon then applies a compression garment against the affected areas of skin to minimize your risk of bleeding.

Hospital Admission
Two to three nights with procedure time 2-3 hours for standard implants with a general anesthetic.
Pre Operative Care
Before surgery please inform your surgeon of any allergies, all medical conditions, and any medication that you are taking (both prescription and non-prescription). To eliminate the chance of post-operative bleeding, you should avoid Aspirin and blood-thinning medication such as brufen for two weeks prior to surgery.
You should also not smoke for 4 weeks prior to surgery as smoking can affect your reaction to the anesthetic and slow down the healing process. Patients that suffer from hypertension must inform the surgeon prior to surgery. In your consultation, you should discuss your expectations of the outcome of the surgery and listen to the surgeon’s opinion. You will probably be required to send photos to the surgeon prior to the consultation. This will enable the assessment and also serve as a reference following surgery.
Post Operative Care
Buttock implants will have a moderate amount of post-operative discomfort and will feel very tight right after surgery, swelling, and bruising post-op. Significant swelling will occur in the first few days making your buttocks feel even tighter.
There will be a taped dressing/bandages on your lower back to cover the incision. The tapes are to be left in place to serve both as a dressing and reinforcement of the incision.
You will probably be able to resume exercise and normal physical activities within a month or two after any residual soreness has subsided. Whilst you still have buttock implants please avoid puncture or injection in the buttock area.
Risks and Complications
Risks are inherent to any surgical procedure.  A Brazilian butt lift may carry fewer risks compared to other surgeries, such as silicone buttock implants. Still, as with any surgery, this procedure carries the risk of side effects some very serious. These include:
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Pain
  • Lumps under the skin in the areas suctioned or injected
  • Loss of skin in the treated areas due to deep infection
  • Fat embolism in the heart or lungs, which can be deadly
Other complications can include, capsular contracture and loss of some sensation in the region. Capsular contracture occurs if the capsule, or shell, around the implant begins to tighten and thicken.
Should a problem arise, there are a number of ways to correct the issue including the possible removal of the capsule is required, or perhaps the implant may need to be replaced, however, this is uncommon if you follow your surgeon’s directions. Buttock augmentation patients typically can return to quiet, low-intensity work within a week and a full recovery may take several months.
Another known side effect is the failure of your buttocks to take up the grafted fat stores. A certain amount of fat injected is broken down and absorbed by the body. Sometimes you may need an additional one or two procedures.
To help minimize this risk, your surgeon may insert extra fat the first time around.
